Community favourite bowling alley set to be replaced according to Hawaiian development group.KAILUA HI - Ninetie's ball returners clunk, returning bowling balls to the players, and the sound of crashing bowling pins signals a strike in a lane nearby. The founder of the Hamakua group, Robert Gratz, is lining up for a shot.
"The sort of value [Pali Lanes] provides to the community, I just don't think Alexander and Baldwin know how to put a dollar on that," Gratz says swinging his bowling ball low and knocking over multiple pins.
The Pali Lanes bowling alley has attracted regular bowlers since its opening, although this is in jeopardy. Property development company Alexander and Baldwin purchased the Kailua property in 2018 with the intention of demolition, after protest, the plans were changed to switch to a month-to-month lease. The new lease for the lanes begins in February 2020, with it comes the loss of both the Thursday and Friday night leagues. Several community groups have banded together to help save the lanes.
