Alexander and Baldwin
Article by Georgia Johnson-King
Alexander and Baldwin is a real estate company in Hawaii which focuses on purchasing and developing business, industrial, and retail communities.
The development company is known for setting up places such as the supermarket chain Safeway, Starbucks stores and other chain stores.
According to the Alexander and Baldwin 2018 annual report the company releases on a yearly basis to their shareholders, Alexander and Baldwin's commercial real estate profit was $58.5 million dollars.
This was significantly different to the 2017 report, which showed a profit in commercial real estate of $34.4 million dollars. The annual report also showed that Alexander and Baldwin currently owned, as of 2018, over 80 acres of Hawaiian land.
The company originally planned to demolish Pali Lanes in early 2019, had since released updated plans that included the possibility of renting out the bowling alley to a chain bowling club, such as the popular 'Dave and Busters' or 'AMF bowling.'
Alexander and Baldwin has been contacted multiple times for comment on the future of Pali Lanes with no response.
The Bowling Leagues
Article by Georgia Johnson-King
The lease for Pali Lanes has switched from a yearly basis, to a month to month basis. This makes it undesirable to sign bowling league contracts as most contracts last a year and Pali Lanes cannot guarantee their lease will be renewed to accommodate the players.
"They have leagues for seniors, special needs leagues, high school PE classes... the stuff Pali lanes gives to the community is not easy to put a dollar on, the sort of value a bowling centre provide[s]," said Robert Gratz, founder of the Hamakua Group.
As of 2020, both the Thursday and Friday night bowling leagues have chosen not to renew their contract. The Thursday night league consisted of over 40 people, and the Friday night league had over 80 regular players.
